2000 projects, 30 states, one ban: The weather makers really do exist.

For years, anyone who didn't immediately think of pure water vapor when looking up was considered mentally ill. Then, this ridiculed fantasy became a business model called geoengineering, complete with a price list, a world map with over 2000 entries, a century of patents, and, in several US states, a criminal offense punishable by up to five years in prison. The irony isn't that the conspiracy theorists were right. The irony is that reality has long since overtaken them, while they're still pointing at the wrong streak in the sky.

Let's start with the hoax, because it's instructive. Almost ten years ago, an alleged sensation swept through the relevant circles: ETH Zurich had supposedly proven that the streaks in the sky were in reality a creeping aluminum poisoning, introduced through geoengineering. The term "conspiracy theory" seemed to have finally been officially discarded.

How engine soot becomes a poison attack
The study does indeed exist. A research group at ETH Zurich examined the soot from the exhaust gases of three engine types and found sixteen metals in it, including aluminum and barium. The aluminum-Alzheimer's connection, originally a cautious suspicion, was inflated into proven mass murder. That's how the whitewash works: take a genuine study, remove the source of the metals, and what remains is the evidence one wanted from the start.

The actual crime is more boring and worse.
This is where things get ugly. While government agencies spent a decade telling concerned citizens their worries were imaginary, genuine geoengineering grew into an openly funded industry. A company called Make Sunsets takes the cake. They ascend balloons to an altitude of around 23 kilometers and release sulfur dioxide to reflect sunlight back into space. It began in 2012 with around 300 projects and now includes over 2000 entries: completed, ongoing, and planned experiments for carbon removal, solar obscuration, and weather modification (the mapWhat's striking is less the number itself than the fact that a non-governmental organization had to create this overview in the first place because a complete public register is lacking. A century of patents that nobody wants to admit to inventing.
For those who want something more concrete, there's no need to go to the dark web, but rather to the patent office. This blog contains over 300 registered patents for weather manipulation (the entire collection) and some of them read like the screenplay that people were laughed at for years. US patent 3899144 from 1975 is simply titled "Powder Contrail Generation," the patented generation of powdery contrails (read), while the same bodies explain to the public that such a streak is nothing but water vapor. US patent 5003186 from 1991, filed by the defense contractor Hughes Aircraft, describes the "stratospheric Welsbach seeding for the reduction of global warming," that is, precisely the scattering of metal oxides in the stratosphere to cool the planet (in the wording) and that was thirty years before Make Sunsets turned it into a subscription service. The infamous HAARP patent 4686605 from 1987 even claims the right to alter entire layers of the ionosphere (the writing). And so that there is no doubt about the business model: Since 2009, a "geoengineering business method using carbon offset credits" has been patented, which describes step by step the spraying of reflective nanoparticles and the sale of cooling as a credit (the registrationAnyone who applies for a patent considers the idea real enough to have it recognized.

When the spinning idea becomes law
And now the point where the authorities' attempts to downplay the issue finally crumble. In 2024, Tennessee became the first state to ban the intentional alteration of sunlight, weather, and temperature. On what basis? On an uncomfortable mix. The laws lump together the real, old cloud seeding technology with the barely tested solar management system; some explicitly exempt cloud seeding, others prohibit everything. This zeal is fueled by a genuine regulatory loophole, by the large sums of money invested in precisely these technologies, and by a distrust that, in the wake of the COVID era, interprets any official reassurance as an admission of guilt. Thus, the findings are a disgrace to both sides. The conspiracy theorists point to harmless jet streamers and overlook the balloons that, just a few kilometers away, are actually releasing sulfur. For a decade, the authorities locked the skeptic in a padded cell and now they're funding precisely what they committed him for. What they diagnosed as delusion has long since been filed as a patent, neatly numbered and assigned to a specific owner. The conspiracy theory is no longer a figment of the imagination; it's a business with donation receipts, a stack of patents, and a legal clause with the threat of imprisonment. Anyone wanting to sell the skies doesn't need a secret army, just a subsidy program, a patent number, and a word that sounds innocuous enough. And so, in broad daylight, they spray sulfur over your head, charge you per gram, simultaneously blame you for being a CO2 polluter, and call it "climate protection"!
