It sounds spectacular, but above all, it's physics taken to its logical conclusion. Researchers have succeeded in transmitting electrical energy precisely through the air – not as some vague science fiction idea, but via clearly defined physical mechanisms such as ultrasound fields, laser beams, and radio frequencies. The University of Helsinki and the University of Oulu are not working on magic, but on controlled fields, conduction paths, and coupling effects. The difference is crucial.

At its core, this is about creating stable transmission paths in a medium previously considered unsuitable: air. High-intensity ultrasound waves can generate density gradients that act as temporary "conducting paths." Electrical discharges can be directed along these paths, reproducibly and precisely. This isn't a lightning strike in a laboratory, but a controlled process that demonstrates that electrical coupling doesn't necessarily have to be bound to rigid conductors. Still experimental, yes – but physically sound.

In parallel, optical energy transmission is maturing. "Power-by-Light" uses focused lasers to deliver energy to photovoltaic receivers over greater distances. The advantage lies less in the spectacle than in the system architecture: galvanic isolation, no conductive connections, and reduced susceptibility to interference in high-voltage or radiation environments. In fields such as industrial automation, aerospace, or sensitive measurement technology, this is not a luxury, but a safety benefit.

The use of radio frequencies is also being further developed. Energy harvesting from ambient waves is not a new concept, but it is now reaching power levels that enable real-world applications. Low-energy sensors, IoT nodes, or autonomous measuring systems could operate continuously without batteries, maintenance cycles, or chemical waste. Technically speaking, this is less about "Wi-Fi for electricity" and more about the consistent use of existing electromagnetic fields – with all the known efficiency limitations and regulatory issues.

And this is precisely where the interesting part begins. Because as the technology becomes more precise, safer, and more controllable, its visibility diminishes. Energy no longer flows via cables, rails, or sockets, but via fields, radiation, and couplings. This poses new challenges for standardization, monitoring, and transparency. Who measures what? Who defines the limits? Who is liable if an invisible system fails?

This is not an argument against the development. On the contrary. It's an indication that technological progress consists not only of feasibility, but also of responsibility. Wireless power transmission is not a gimmick. It's an infrastructure issue. And like any infrastructure, it demands more than enthusiasm: understanding, control, and a public that knows what is actually being transmitted through the air.
