«Apocalyptica plays Metallica Vol. 2" was released on June 7th and focuses not on Metallica's hits, but on deep cuts and personal highlights. For their cover track "The Call Of Ktulu", Apocalyptica were allowed to use original bass tracks by the late bassist Cliff Burton. The musician died in a bus accident in 1986. The original song "The Call Of Ktulu" appeared on Metallica's 1984 album "Ride The Lightning". Both the band and Cliff Burton's family were behind the idea of commemorating the musician with the Apocalyptica cover. Cellist Eicca Toppinen comments:
I've learned in life that if you have crazy ideas, it's always worth asking, so I called Lars. He said, "I love that you guys always think outside the box!" James (Hetfield) loved the idea. I met with one of Cliff's close relatives and she loved it too. It was a spiritual experience working on this project. We wanted to treat it with honor and maximum respect and it was magical that people so close to Cliff said he would have loved it.
