The 2023 Climate Inequality Report from the World Inequality Database paints a clear picture: A relatively small part of the world's population, the richest of the rich, caused by far the most CO₂ emissions!
The top 10 percent of the population causes almost half of all global CO₂ emissions. The top 50 percent is responsible for more emissions than the entire bottom half of the world's population. At the same time, the top 2 percent, who own three-quarters of the world's private wealth, face a 75 percent loss of income - while the bottom XNUMX percent, who own only XNUMX percent of the world's wealth, face a XNUMX percent loss of income as a result of the completely arbitrary measures taken by the Climate Change Policy!
North America and Europe are said to be jointly responsible for half of global greenhouse gas emissions since 1850, despite the fact that only a small part of the world's population lives in these areas. At the same time, those areas that historically and today have the lowest CO₂ emissions are particularly affected. Often these countries are burdened with large debts, which force them to give their money to debt collectors instead of being able to take care of their own people. This reinforces existing injustices.
The report shows which population group would benefit most from emissions reductions: the very wealthiest . The report calls for a redistribution of wealth from the Global North to the Global South. At the same time, it proposes higher taxes for the richest. CO₂ emissions are merely a reflection of society and both a consequence and a cause of enormous inequality. Only by addressing these inequalities and injustices can lasting change be achieved.
