Anyone who votes "yes" in Switzerland has already lost on Monday if the result doesn't fit the political narrative. "Direct democracy" is the Confederation's most expensive tranquilizer, and its effects can be seen once again in the nursing care debacle at the end of April 2026. This is not an isolated incident, but a pattern. Mass immigration, Alpine protection, second homes, preventive detention, deportation – six referendums, six broken promises, one system. Swiss "direct democracy" only works as long as the majority decides what the Federal Council and Parliament wanted anyway. If they decide on the wrong thing, the revision process begins in the Federal Palace, involving hardship clauses, macroeconomic considerations, and concerns about international law – ultimately resulting in a law in which just enough of the referendum's intent remains to allow everyone in the Federal Palace to sleep soundly again.

The Swiss lie about direct democracy

Four crumbs instead of staffing levels
61 percent yes to the 2021 care initiative, five years later four cosmetic crumbs and a proposal that, according to SRF analysis "Doesn't deliver on its promises." Four minor improvements. That's how a Green Party National Councillor rhetorically summed them up at the end of the debate. Four cosmetic crumbs as an answer to a mandate from the people, born out of pandemic applause and since then systematically undermined. Anyone still talking about "direct democracy" here has either never read the constitution or simply skimmed over the minutes of the National Council debate. It's the usual charade, and this time even the SRF parliamentary correspondent uses the phrase "disappointment foretold" in the headline.

Even in its 2024 consultation, the Federal Council removed two key concerns of the nursing care initiative: financing and the mandatory staffing ratio. The rest was further watered down in the National Council. Maximum working hours per week, flexible working hours, compensation – everything was weakened. The result: four minor improvements regarding night work, breaks, and duty rosters. In the final vote, almost a fifth of the council abstained. A silent protest against a law that stuffs the people's mandate into a file folder, slaps a "implemented" label on it, and sends nurses home with a few well-placed applause reminders.

Mass immigration initiative – quotas become job postings
February 9, 2014. The people and estates take part. Mass immigration initiative The constitutional mandate demanded quotas, maximum numbers, and genuine priority for domestic workers. What was delivered was a watered-down version of "domestic preference"—a mandatory job posting requirement in sectors with high unemployment. Employers remain free to choose whomever they hire. Even that SECO confirmedThe measure had "hardly any impact" on immigration. Since then, around 100,000 people have immigrated to Switzerland every year, the population is approaching ten million, and Bern is rubbing its eyes in astonishment as to why the SVP has launched a new initiative. The will of the people becomes a constitutional text, a federal gazette notice, and thus shelved. Democracy apparently doesn't get more direct than that.

Alpine Initiative – 32-year waiting period
February 20, 1994. 51,9 percent vote in favor of the Alpine Initiative. Shifting transalpine freight traffic from road to rail. Constitutional deadline for implementation: 2004. Maximum limit: 650,000 truck journeys per year. Reality in 2014: 1,25 million trucksIn 2011, the Federal Council admitted in its relocation report... even aThat the goal will not be achieved. It's 2026, 32 years after the popular vote, 22 years after the constitutional deadline expired, and on the Gotthard axis, traffic continues to crawl bumper to bumper. Has the popular decision expired? In Switzerland, this is an open question.

The Swiss lie about direct democracy

Second Home Initiative – Constitution with Loopholes
March 11, 2012. 50,6 percent yes. This should have put an end to the unchecked construction of second homes once they reach a 20 percent share in any municipality. In a landmark ruling in 2013, the Federal Supreme Court clarified the situation: an immediate building ban from the date of approval. The Federal Council and Parliament subsequently worked on a solution. Exceptions to the law, which left not only Helvetia Nostra speechless. Among other things, the conversion of existing primary residences into secondary residences was permitted. The result: a housing shortage in tourist communities and a constitutional article so riddled with loopholes that even Valais property developers can walk right through it with a smile. The will of the people implemented, provided one defines "implementation" as "something like that, but not quite."

Preventive detention initiative – the people wanted tough measures, but got symbolism.
February 8, 2004. 56,2 percent voted in favor of life imprisonment for extremely dangerous, untreatable sex offenders and violent criminals. Sounds clear-cut. It wasn't. The Federal Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that a projected untreatableness of 20 years was insufficient. The standard is not applicable in practice And it is not being applied. A single legally binding verdict in over twenty years. Initiator Anita Chaaban drew a sobering conclusion in 2014: hardly anyone dares to hand down a life sentence. A mandate from the people fulfilled, in homeopathic doses.

Deportation initiative – hardship clause as a bypass to the will of the people
November 28, 2010. 52,9 percent voted in favor of deporting foreign criminals with automatic expulsion from the country. The direct counter-proposal was rejected on the same day. What did Parliament do in the final vote of March 20, 2015It smuggled the "hardship clause" into the law, which in key points was based precisely on the counter-proposal that the electorate had rejected in the same ballot. You can hardly reverse a popular vote more elegantly. Initiative passed, counter-proposal rejected, counter-proposal implemented, and this is called "respect for the will of the people"!

Conclusion: Ignore the token votes, then at least Bern will lie without your legitimacy.
During the voting campaign for 10 Million Initiative While the ensuing uproar rages, those in the Federal Parliament already know how the game will end. A majority on Sunday, a majority against the will of the majority on Monday, a "hardship clause" on Tuesday. The inconvenient truth, which isn't found in any civics textbook: Every ballot you cast is a receipt. A receipt that the Federal Council, Parliament, and lobby groups can use to prove that "the people have spoken"—regardless of whether they implement your will or shred it at the consultation table. You provide the legitimacy, they deliver the result. You pay for this cycle with your credibility.

The only threat that truly works in this system is collective abstention. Not protesting through an initiative that's inevitably watered down. Not writing a letter to the editor that no one reads. But coldly refusing to become complicit in one's own disenfranchisement. If tomorrow only 15 percent of eligible voters participate, no Federal Councillor can speak "in the name of the people" without the punchline immediately landing – in the name of which people, exactly? Then the politician is exposed, revealing what he actually does: lobbying for pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, business associations, Brussels with its EUdSSR bureaucracy, and for his own re-election. The fig leaf of "the will of the people" disappears because the fig leaf is no longer being supplied. Stop supplying it, and you force the political class to face the truth about itself!

Every vote you cast is the basis for the press release with which Bern will dismiss you tomorrow – and call this "the will of the people"! Anyone who goes to this ballot box is not a citizen, but an extra in the drama of their own funeral – and the director applauds himself for it! The only initiative that still has a real chance in this country is a vote boycott – and it requires neither signatures nor parliamentary approval!

My blog was never designed to spread news, let alone get political, but with current affairs I just can't help but capture information here that is otherwise censored on all other channels. I am aware that the design page may not seem "serious" to many in this regard, but I will not change this to please the "mainstream". Anyone who is open to non-state-compliant information sees the content and not the packaging. I've tried enough to provide people with information over the last 2 years, but quickly noticed that it never matters how it's "packaged", but what the other person's attitude towards it is. I don't want to put honey on anyone's mouth to meet expectations in any way, so I'll keep this design because hopefully at some point I'll be able to stop making these political statements, because it's not my goal to go on like this forever ;) I leave it up to everyone how they deal with it.
