In the clip, glaciologist Jørgen Peder Steffensen shows an ice core from the Viking Age. That fell in the Medieval Warm Period, when it was an average of 1,5 degrees warmer than today. Ice cores contain important information about the Earth's climate. Based on the ice cores, which are three kilometers long in total, the scientists can look back 120 years, so to speak.
Steffensen was able to determine the average temperature of the last 10 years to a thousandth of a degree. What turns out? Four thousand years ago it was on average 000 degrees warmer than today. Between 2,5 and 4000 years the average temperature in Greenland dropped by 2000 degrees. Then the temperature rose slightly during the Medieval Warm Period. Thereafter the temperature fell again, only to rise again around 2,5, about the time meteorological observations began.
The same observations have been made elsewhere in the northern hemisphere. It will be very difficult to prove that the rise in temperature in the 20th century was man-made or the result of natural variation, Steffensen pointed out. "After all, we started taking measurements at the coldest point in the last 10 years".
