On June 14, Switzerland will vote on the popular initiative "No 10-Million Switzerland!", and hardly anyone still refers to it by its official name. Political parties, unions, and business associations are all drumming up support against the "chaos initiative"—a label that doesn't come from the initiative itself, but from the laboratory of opinion polls. And the best part: its originators openly admit it.

"You can't win with facts": The manipulation confession regarding the 10 million vote

A confession during prime time
FDP National Councillor Simon Michel, Ypsomed CEO and one of the loudest opponents of the proposal, declared at the end of May in an interview with the RepublicThe Swiss Federation of Trade Unions (SGB) commissioned an analysis from the research institute Sotomo. Its findings: more conservative voters need to be won over, emotions and mobilization are crucial – and the study concluded "that we cannot win this campaign with facts." That's why they chose the term "chaos initiative," because it has an emotional impact. Michel himself finds the label somewhat harsh, but politics is becoming increasingly populist, which is why strong language is sometimes necessary.

Read this twice. This isn't some anonymous spin doctor spouting off; it's a sitting member of parliament calmly explaining that his own side has introduced a buzzword because the facts aren't enough to secure a victory. What was once dismissed as a conspiracy theory is now direct feedback from the engine room.

Sotomo includes the user manual with the package.
The Brief report on the Sotomo campaign survey It reads less like research than like a handbook for managing emotions: the chaos narrative resonated better with those surveyed than any positive argument for the bilateral agreements, and people in need of care were a better subject for an emotional "no" campaign than pensioners.

"You can't win with facts": The manipulation confession regarding the 10 million vote

People, sorted by tear-jerking factor. For context: The study was commissioned by the SGB, i.e., the "No" side itself – this is hardly independent science. The Unia trade union unabashedly explains on its campaign website that it calls the proposal that because its adoption would plunge the economy into chaos, and the official "No" platform even includes the fear-mongering word in its domain name.

Both warehouses affix labels
Before anyone starts canonizing the SVP: The "sustainability initiative" is also framing in its purest form – a feel-good buzzword from the eco-toolkit used as packaging for a population cap. Serving up labels instead of substance to the electorate is the same job on both sides. The difference lies in the admission: Only the "no" side has documented that its slogan was chosen because the facts are insufficient. This blog is all too familiar with this pattern – whether as Masterpiece of modern propaganda or when they die NATO recruits filmmakers for mental warfareWhere the argument is lacking, the adjective takes over.

Democracy by the book
Direct democracy thrives on the idea of the informed citizen who weighs arguments and then decides. This very idea is being buried here – by professionals from both sides, using survey data as their shovel. Anyone who admits they can't win with facts and still wants to win has long since abandoned any confidence in their own platform. On June 14th, Switzerland isn't voting on ten million people, but rather on which side has tested the most effective fear-mongering word. A hundred years ago, Edward Bernays needed an entire book; today, a campaign survey with a PDF attachment suffices. The electorate is allowed to choose between a deceptive package with an eco-friendly veneer and a scare tactic from the opinion lab. On commission, tests are conducted to determine which word evokes the most fear, it's slapped on the ballot for the sovereign – and this is called a "voting campaign"!

My blog was never designed to spread news, let alone get political, but with current affairs I just can't help but capture information here that is otherwise censored on all other channels. I am aware that the design page may not seem "serious" to many in this regard, but I will not change this to please the "mainstream". Anyone who is open to non-state-compliant information sees the content and not the packaging. I've tried enough to provide people with information over the last 2 years, but quickly noticed that it never matters how it's "packaged", but what the other person's attitude towards it is. I don't want to put honey on anyone's mouth to meet expectations in any way, so I'll keep this design because hopefully at some point I'll be able to stop making these political statements, because it's not my goal to go on like this forever ;) I leave it up to everyone how they deal with it.
