With the app «N Back Challenge» you can sustainably improve your intelligence and that has been scientifically proven, thanks to researchers at the University of Bern. But what does «Dual N-back» actually train? Put simply, it is about improving fluid intelligence by training working memory. The working memory in the human brain, so to speak. The second component of intelligence is crystalline intelligence, i.e. data storage, to use IT terminology. Fluid intelligence training will make you better at virtually every cognitive discipline because you can keep more content in your mind. Be it notes when making music, longer content in a specialist text or when programming or by learning larger blocks of information.
The app presents you with a sequence of stimuli, specifically a position in a 3×3 field grid is displayed and a letter is spoken at the same time. For example, the field at the bottom left lights up, and a computer voice says «T» at the same time. As soon as either the same field in the grid lights up again as the next combination or the voice says “T” again, you have to confirm this by tapping on the “Sound” or “Position” field. This is how the simplest level works. If n=2, the task is that you have to memorize the field and the spoken letter two steps before. Hence the «N» in «N-Back», which stands for n steps back. "Dual" stands for two stimuli that take place in parallel. The parallelization requires maximum concentration during the test, which trains your brain convolutions. The methodology was tested by Susanne M. Jaeggi and some colleagues in a study at the University of Bern and the benefit was confirmed.
By searching for «N Back» in the app stores, you can find various Apps. In contrast to many other N-Back apps, «N-Back Challenge» is visually very appealing. The training also feels natural and is motivating. The current status and successes are communicated in a meaningful way, and during the game you are advised of other useful measures that are beneficial to mental health, such as regular exercise and a healthy diet. You can add friends for even more dynamism. Then you can see who has come how far. Detailed statistics are also displayed on how you rank in relation to your friends and the general public. Comparing yourself with your circle of friends can of course increase motivation, but it is more important that you do not let yourself be demotivated by high scores from others. You know yourself best and can therefore decide whether the comparison motivates you or not. Unfortunately, inviting friends does not work across platforms, but is done via the Apple Game Center or Google Play.
The app is free to use – as long as you are disciplined enough. If you accept a 20-day challenge and do the exercises every day, you pay nothing. However, part of the deal is that you pay one franc for every day you don't exercise - this should enable the app's developers to continue working on the app caffeine-driven. With weekly training, you have to do twelve sessions a week so that you don't have to pay anything. If you like the app and still miss a day too often, you can unlock it forever by buying a pizza for the developer crew (8 francs). The concept is quite funny. The app is ad-free and doesn't try to sell anything else either. The developer found an interesting twist with the mechanic of paying for lack of discipline. By the way, I wasn't disciplined enough and soon bought a pizza...
