Western media coverage and the political narrative surrounding the war in Ukraine have nothing to do with reality – this is the conclusion reached by three US experts who embarked on a research trip to Donbas. Daniel Kovalik (lawyer and human rights expert), Jackson Hinkle (journalist), and Christopher Helali (international spokesperson for the Communist Party of the USA) described their impressions on July 3, 2024, during a press conference at the UN building in New York. They reported that Kyiv was perpetrating terror against its own population and that Western taxpayer money was being used to commit war crimes in Donbas.
During their travels through the contested areas, the three experts spoke with numerous locals and witnesses to the fighting and terrorist attacks of the past ten years. Contrary to the Western narrative, they did not meet anyone who still considers themselves part of Ukraine or occupied by Russia. On the contrary: Danie Kovalik summarizes his experiences on the ground: "I just want to say that I am morally certain, after visiting Donetsk, Kherson, and Crimea, that the people in these regions never want to be part of Ukraine again. [...] And that is the truth. I can guarantee that the people of Crimea want to be part of Russia."
Christopher Helali comes to a similar conclusion: "The people of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics in Donbas have endured a decade of bombing, terror, and brutality that have been far underreported or even misreported in the West. […] What we discovered provided a completely different understanding, one that went well beyond the reductive narratives of the mainstream media here in the United States and in the West."
Jackson Hinkle explains: "Ukraine is not seeking an end to the conflict, but rather is trying to escalate it in unimaginably dangerous ways. […] Ukraine is not defeating Russia, but is using its Western support to commit horrific acts of terror against the people of Donbass, whom it supposedly wants to save."
The three experts call for a rethink of media reporting and an accurate portrayal of the reality in Donbass in order to contribute to de-escalation and genuine peace. Hinkle particularly appeals to journalists to visit Donbass themselves and report on the situation firsthand. In his view, the war, which has now dragged on for ten years, cannot be ended militarily but only produces more and more immeasurable suffering: "Indeed, I would like to encourage all journalists present here today to visit Donbass themselves, on the side that has been liberated. Most importantly, we must commit to reporting the truth, better portraying the innocent civilians caught in the crossfire, and seeking a path to genuine peace. Only through truth and transparency can we hope to resolve this conflict and avert the devastating threat of global catastrophe."
