CRISPR-Cas makes it possible: Gene drives are a genetic engineering process that is used, among other things, with the help of the genetic engineering tool CRISPR-Cas to spread certain properties - for example infertility - quickly and permanently in wild animal and plant populations. By releasing such gene drive organisms, entire populations or species in nature should be genetically modified or even eradicated.
The dangers and risks associated with gene drive technology are indisputable. The developers of this technology also point this out. They hope to be able to minimize these risks by technical means by limiting the global impact of the technology. Should humanity take such a risk? Once released, gene drive organisms and whatever develops from them in the further course of this man-made evolution could possibly never be retrieved. The genetic engineering chain reaction would take its global course.
Stop Genedrives calls on the German federal government, as part of its EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2020, to bring about a Europe-wide ban on the release of gene drive organisms and to use its role as EU negotiator at the next Conference of the Parties to the UN Biodiversity Convention in October 2020 to prevent the first releases of Prevent gene drive organisms into nature.
