There are ideas that can change the world. Agari is the alternative to the plastic bottle would be the beginning to get our garbage problem under control. Because why do we use a material that takes hundreds, if not thousands of years to rot, for items that end up in the trash after being used once?
Plastic waste everywhere, in the sea it is now piling up to form synthetic islands. So it would be a start to stop making plastic drinking bottles. The Finnish designer Ari Jónsson seems to have come a lot closer to this idea, because he has developed a material called "Agari", which is made from red seaweed and is also the raw material for the vegan starch Agar Agar. A bottle made from «Agari» only remains a bottle as long as there is still liquid in it. Once emptied, it dries up and begins to decompose. Nothing remains but 100% organic waste, which in principle could even be eaten. It may be that there are still a few steps to go before it is suitable for the masses, is the bottle so robust that you can easily throw it in your backpack without it leaking? Can the bottles be produced in large quantities at all? Is it even possible to produce bottles from Agari so inexpensively that beverage prices remain stable? But next to glass, this is the best alternative to plastic I've ever come across. I sincerely hope that Ari Jónsson actually succeeds in changing the world with it...
