Tenacious D singer and guitarist Kyle Gass has found a colorful bunch of comrades-in-arms and is launching his new project with them «Kyle Gass Band» (KGB) from the baptism. The fact that the fat man with the Hawaiian shirt tick can't just goof around was proven back in the 90s with his hard rock project «Trainwreck», after the end of which he released the «Kyle Gass Band» founded. So now it's time for Kyle Gass' first quasi-solo album, although a few of the usual suspects from the D orbit are back, of course. The debut was released in the States almost two years ago and is now finally getting an official Europe-wide release.
There really is no need to say anything about Kyle Gass, is there? At the latest when you look at the cover, the rock fan knows that he is dealing with one half of the legendary duo "Tenacious D". Along with Mike Bray, who fired us up as Sasquatch at the last Tenacious D show, John Konesky, who was already involved in the side project Trainwreck, Jason Keene and Tim Spier, Kyle has now ventured into an album without his buddy Jack Black. When you hear the Kyle Gass Band's debut album for the first time, you realize just how big of an influence Kyle Gass must have had on Tenacious D. Kyle Gass is Rock! It's not necessarily original or innovative, but it's highly entertaining and makes for a little feel-good in between. In addition to casual classic rock with acoustic or electric guitars, he also combines light country influences and blues elements. A bit of AC/DC is everywhere.
Earthy, no-nonsense, easy-going Rock'n'Roll, that's what fans want and what they get. Of course not with the famous comedy attitude of his main band, but with that certain mischievous wink. Ten numbers that offer hardly any new insights into the development of rock music, but all of which at least encourage you to snap your fingers or tap your feet. Kyle Gass demonstrates a flair for the lightness of being. Proof of this is the groovy opener "Manchild", to the casual "Bro Ho" you greet the neighbors sitting in a rocking chair and drinking cans of beer from the veranda or make the streets of the next small town unsafe with your pick-up ("Road Chops"). "Dyin' Day" has a clear "Lynyrd Skynyrd" label and "Our Job Is To Rock" is reminiscent of "The Who" at the beginning. The title is to be taken literally, be it acoustic guitar or electric guitar, rock is rock and Kyle Gass is Kyle Gass.
"Tremendous" doesn't shy away from classic rock solos and AC/DC closing rattles and "Ram Damn Bunctious" and "Getting The Band Back Together" simply recycle the best of all highway hits and pop up in the rearview mirror every now and then a harmonica hillbilly and spices up the rippling songs with a bit more America. The music of the "Kyle Gass Band" is full of clichés of American rock music and delivered with wonderfully ironic lyrics. The album takes you on a 39-minute journey of carefully crafted songs that you'll want to hear over and over again. The combo knows how Rock'n'Roll works and also impress with their outstanding backing vocals, so that you want to sing along right away. The debut disc beautifully combines massive guitar solos, a bass that encourages you to stomp along and rhythms that make you want to dance around the apartment playing air guitar in your underwear.
As already mentioned, Kyle Gass isn't forcing a new «masterpiece» on us. Which means that none of the numbers represented here surpass the really big Tenacious D hits. Nevertheless, "Kyle Gass Band" is a piece of entertainment that is pleasant to consume from start to finish without any noticeable failures. Wherever you are and whatever you're doing, whether it's driving, a barbecue party, DIY or homework, it's an album that's just fun and puts you in a good mood. Nothing more and certainly nothing less. If you like light but excellently composed rock, you won't be disappointed with «Kyle Gass Band». What's particularly great is that every song is really catchy and can be hummed along afterwards without any problems. For fans of classic rock, this is a real gem that shouldn't be missed. If you like a good mixture of acoustic and electric guitars, you should definitely get this album. The next barbecue evening soaked in bourbon and cans of beer is sure to come and then you can wear Hawaiian shirts again. exceptionally.
