According to the Bible, the «Seraphim» are a higher race of angels. Fiery, six-winged angels hovering around God's throne and constantly crying out "Holy, holy, holy" are called Seraphim, the word means "the burning ones" in Hebrew. At the same time «Seraphim» is also the title of the debut of the German black/death metal duo «Nýr Gata«, consisting of Sarghas and Nordmann, who are also active together at Nelandhir, Immorior and Yarr. «Nýr Gata» doesn't break new ground, but what we have here is an album that many groups in this genre would be only too happy to pull off themselves. Not a perfect album, but highly recommended because of its diversity alone!
This work from «Nýr Gata» is a concept album. The seraphim accuses that despite their base desires and selfish actions, people are placed above their peers in the kingdom of heaven after their lives have ended. God then sends him to hell to see, experience and learn “being human”. From the beginning you become part of the story of Seraphim and his steps gradually progress from the first to the last chapter towards absolute darkness and despair, guided by pain and hatred. The band «Nýr Gata» consists of Sarghas, who specifically contributes lyrics and vocals, and Nordmann, who is well versed in programming, mixing and mastering and both are equally responsible for instruments and composition.
The album contains nine songs with a total playing time of around 38 minutes. The cover of the debut album is expressionistic in black and white and brings with it depressing, ominous images that fit perfectly with the basic atmosphere of the album. The German texts were written and performed by Sarghas. Depending on the chapter and the position of the protagonist, the voice varies and you can only find words of praise for the singing, because this is just perfect to immerse yourself in the lyrics. But that requires a certain amount of attention and, above all, time to let the whole album sink in. If you don't have both, you'd better devote yourself to something else.
The sound is good throughout and the instruments are well mixed. Musically, the album builds on blast beats and melodic riffs that, along with the vocals, would have fit on a folk metal album. As mentioned, the vocalist often switches between screams and growls, and especially in the refrains, clean vocals are often used. Although the songs usually have a considerable playing time, you never tire of listening to them again and again, because you always discover something new that you hadn't noticed before. There is never anything like monotony or even boredom. The instrumental work of the two gentlemen fits perfectly with the theme of the album. On «Seraphim» the listener is offered a lot, from furious, mean shredding, melodic highs to calm intermediate melodies, everything is included.
So you are offered a lot of variety, through variations in the speed and the heaviness of the music, as well as the use of keyboards, a diverse spectrum of sounds is created, ranging from epic melodies («Captured in Eternity») to slightly progressive songs («In wrong freedom ») to aggressive demolition («Son of Hate»). The drums alone on «In wrong freedom» sweeps the beetles out of the room and is absolutely great, and one of my favorite songs is the song «Acheron», because it just blows your head off!
«Seraphim» doesn't lose any of its intensity or atmosphere even after several listens. No title sounds like another and the CD is a very decent debut that you can listen to more than once without getting bored. To come back to the lyrics of «Nýr Gata», you should really take your time for them, because I heard terms that I didn't know until then. So it was called looking up and you also learn something new. You can tell that this album wasn't just spitted out unlovingly, but that a lot of attention is paid to detail. «Seraphim» is an all-round successful Black/Death Metal album and if the way through hell were accompanied by music, «Seraphim» is the soundtrack for it.
