"Sedunum" is the Latin name for the city of Sion or Sitten and "Son et lumières" are events that take place throughout France in summer. In this framework, performances with the design of light, through fire, candles and illuminated objects, a poetic, sensual, atmospheric and powerful music productions are offered. No castles or medieval towns are spared, theaters are performed everywhere and infinitely expensive fireworks are shot, which are then combined with music. From this point of view, it is almost clear that "Sedunum" takes place in French-speaking Switzerland and that the name is immediately adapted to make the play on words "Sion en lumières" close.
Until September 13th, "Sedunum" is a show of music and light, which will take place on the Rue des Châteaux and on the Prélet de Valère
will be shown. The two Valais artists, the musician Alexandre Locher and the light artist Rodrigue Pellaud are responsible for the project. The event takes place on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in the historic old town of Sion between Valère and Tourbillon. These two castles are included in the play of light and complemented acoustically by the music on this album. On these days the soundtrack will be synchronized with the terrific light show by Rodrigue Pellaud, which stages the two castles.
"Sedunum" is a symphonic metal project with more symphonic than metal, you can definitely call the disc a "classic" record. "Sedunum" is actually the soundtrack for those "Son et lumiere" occasions and that brings us to the problem of the album: something is missing! The album sounds like a symphony, music that speaks for itself. Music that doesn't need pictures – the listeners make the pictures themselves – and that's exactly what “Sedunum” only partially succeeds in doing. Musically it is classical orchestral work with tremendous instrumentation - a philharmonic orchestra, a choir, percussions and guitar, keyboards and piano. But the musical center is XY aka Alexandre Locher, who is responsible for percussion and piano programming. The multi-instrumentalist is known as the mastermind of the Sion band Samaêl, an internationally successful prog metal group whose career has already spanned more than 20 years. Here his original pieces are characterized by medieval melodies and canted rhythms. The pieces were played with over 80 musicians and recorded in March 2014 in Prague's Smecky Studios.
«Sedunum» takes the listener on a journey beyond temporal or physical boundaries. The elements range from classic to modern influences to experimental elements. Percussions and tribal rhythms are accentuated by the orchestral instrumentation including harpsichord, guitars and full choir. But “Sedunum” will probably only be complete and holistic with the addition of the visual implementation. On its own, it remains a relatively classic but also relatively unspectacular work. So if you have the opportunity to travel to Sion and see the entire spectacle, you shouldn't miss it. The soundtrack can be used on the way there to set the mood and on the way back to keep the memory of the event alive.
