German rock is booming. The basic theme with its underdog lyrics, the mixture of Schunkelschlager in bourgeois punk garb and kitsch ballads remains the same in almost all bands of the genre. The "Böhse Onkelz" recently celebrated their reunion in front of almost 220 fans and their heir to the throne "Frei.Wild" regularly places in the top 000. Nose? Bloody! Losses? Calculated! spine? Available! «serum 114» still do exactly what they believe in. Determined, but anything but blind, the four punk rockers from Hessen are making steady progress in the eighth year of the band's existence and present their new album, which contains 14 tracks and has a playing time of 45 minutes. On the sixth disc they jump “headfirst into nothing”. The question remains, shall we jump with you?
The four Frankfurt musicians have already performed with "Serum 114", "Antiheld" and "Your Voice/Your Face!" convince and what they are now delivering with «Headfirst into Nothing» tops all their predecessors! Over the years, «Serum 114» has matured. But as versatile as the band is now, the Hessians have retained their essence over the years. It doesn't matter if «serum 114» bow to Johnny Cash or stop by the Titty Twister, they remain exactly what they have always been. Rebellious. Honest. Always loud. Never adjusted. Better at the side of the last friend than in the anonymity of the well-behaved crowd. This is how «Serum 114» works. The formation carefully observes the hypocrisy with which cohesion is feigned in Europe, while everyone is cooking their own soup. The intro of the new record is just as fragmented. The European anthem - frayed into its individual parts and yet somehow existent. As if good old Ludwig Van already knew. No wonder the boys found out, because «Serum 114» know where they belong and where they stand.
When they were left with the debt of their former record label after it collapsed, they could have thrown it all away in 2009. But pinching is not, has never been the case. They kept going, playing their hearts out and growing from it. You could already hear that on their 2011 album «Antiheld». Just like the successor «Your Voice/Your Face!» (2012), «Serum 114» mainly relied on themselves. Production, artwork, photos, videos - everything was penned by the four musicians. It is therefore only logical that the musicians founded their own label "Junge, dein Label" this year. Keep going! That's the philosophy of the band. On stage, the Hessians have always cooked a spicy soup of energy, authenticity, skill and refreshing non-conformity. They earned their reputation as an excellent live band with over 400 concerts in 6 countries. The new album was released on July 4th, after which the “Headfirst into the Club Tour 2014” will follow in October.
The four guys start their new album "Feuertrunken" and, through the musically torn European anthem, present the problems of the EU, between lip service to fraternity and national idiosyncrasy properly driving punk rock song, which should cause a lot of movement in front of the stage. The title song is a bit more moderate, which has the ubiquitous followers as its content. After the somewhat hectic “Because I can”, “What could become of me” settles accounts with the record industry. On the other hand, "Losing means" is blessed with plenty of pathos, a very driving song that you can sing along to excellently. On the other hand, “Illegal Fans” is aggressively demanding and takes issue with today's prevailing download mania and greed is cool mentality in society. Deichkind composed the original, the guys from Frankfurt reinterpret the song in their own way. Completely different tones are followed by «Don't say I've lost my faith», which comes through the speakers in a very bluesy style with a country touch.
But enough of the quiet sounds, in the last third Serum 114 really go full throttle again and start with "I'm back" and "The years go by" - on the one hand it's about returning after a long journey and on the other hand the band sings about it Death of a friend you never forget - no matter how long ago it was. "Everything will be fine" is a great song that allows for a lot of mental cinema. With "What connects us what we stand for" things get rougher again before "Niemals simply ao" strikes calmer, more thoughtful sounds again. After a quiet beginning, the song steadily climbs up without neglecting the basic melancholy. The bonus track "I don't like you" is also one of the better ones on the album - brilliant melody, great lyrics and a very special message, to a very special person! All in all the sound on the album is perfectly mixed, punchy and clear.
The first album on the band's own label is a direct hit! «Serum 114» deliver their best album so far and are 100% convincing. The songs sit, the lyrics are clever, funny, serious, direct and at the same time stimulate thought. All in all, the album is a highlight of the German rock genre. Lyrically, I would wish for a little more social criticism to really be classified as punk rock. Musically, however, there is significantly more punk here than in 90 percent of German rock bands, since the band dares more and sometimes breaks out of traditional songwriting. As with the predecessors, there are riffs that are very concise and refrains that have catchy tunes. The production is top-notch and the powerful "social distortion sound" again dominates the sound. The band seems to have grown up a bit and the boys find very critical words more than once. With songs like "What could become of me?" or the single «We have to go further», they once again managed to produce songs with a high «sing-along» potential. «Upside down into nothing» is an album that is anything but headless and really makes you want to jump into nothing with the Frankfurters on their upcoming club tour in October.
