We've lost another legend! Angus Scrimm, best known for playing the terrifying "Tall Man" in the horror classic "Phantasm" ("The Evil"), died yesterday. The film's director and close friend Don Coscarelli wrote via email: "Angus Scrimm passed away peacefully tonight surrounded by his friends and loved ones. He was 89 years old. His performance as the Tall Man is a paramount achievement in horror film history. He was the latest in a long line of classic horror movie stars. He was a great actor and an even better friend. We will miss him."
Angus Scrimm may be known to most as the "Tall Man" from the "Phantasm" films ("Das Böse"), in which he starred from 1979. Incidentally, in order to appear taller despite his 1,93 m, he liked to wear suits and platform shoes that were too small. The role of Tall Man was the great stepping stone for Scrimm, because although his career began in 1973, it was only afterwards that he got the big roles in film and theater. Scrimm grew up in his native Kansas City before moving to California to study drama at USC under William C. De Mille. He originally pursued the profession of journalist, including for magazines such as TV Guide and the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. He also wrote lyrics for the booklets of their LPs and CDs for various artists such as Frank Sinatra or the Beatles. For this he won a Grammy, still under the name Rory Guy. Scrimm played SD-6 agent Calvin McCullough in Alias.
By the way, he kept his real name Lawrence Rory Guy until 1979, when he starred in Don Coscarelli's "Phantasm". For the role, he reverted to his college stage name, Angus Scrimm, which has stuck with him ever since. He invented it based on a combination of his relatives' names and the theatrical term for scrim. Although best known for dark roles, Scrimm has a soft spot for comedy alongside classic horror films like Dracula (1931) and Frankenstein (1931). However, he mostly played roles from the horror genre in films such as "Vampirella", "I seel the Dead", "John dies at the End" and "Disciples - disciples of Satan". He played the SD-6's senior officer on the TV show Alias and had a recurring role in the spooky radio drama series Tales From Beyond the Pale. In addition, last year Scrimm was in front of the camera for the fifth phantasm film, subtitled «Ravager», directed by Coscarelli. The film will be released later this year, and Mr. Star Wars JJ Abrams is also working on a 4K remake of the original Phantasm.
Last year we had to say goodbye to some of the most iconic horror characters, such as Christopher Lee and Wes Craven. Now the year 2016 has barely begun and once again we have to say goodbye to a legend. Thank you Mr. Scrimm for playing Tall Man, I will never forget the gaunt figure of the terrifying villain, one of the most iconic characters in horror movies. You lived a long, wonderful life, Mr. Scrimm. Thank you for everything. I hope you rest in peace.
