It's been over 30 years since Ralph Macchio and William Zabka fought as rivals in the cult film "The Karate Kid". Now they are stepping back into the ring for a sequel series called «Cobra Kai». In 2018, the story will be continued as a series adaptation in ten episodes on the Youtube offshoot Youtube Red. So it can soon be applied and polished again.
"Back to the Future", "The Goonies" and "The Karate Kid" are three of the films that earned the title of cult in the 80s. The latter martial arts saga about a teenager named Daniel LaRusso, who learns the Asian martial arts by polishing cars, among other things, was one of the big hits of 1984. 34 years later, the Karate Kid will celebrate a comeback, because according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter (THR), Google has secured the rights to “Cobra Kai” for YouTube Red. Also on board are Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, protagonist and antagonist in the original. Mr. Miyagi actor Pat Morita, who died in 2005, is not part of the party.
The series will take place 30 years after the events of The Karate Kid. Unable to let go of the past, Johnny (William Zabka) reopens the Cobra Kai dojo to take on the now hugely successful Daniel (Ralph Macchio). But he also has his problems, because he is missing his mentor and friend Mr. Miyagi. In each of the ten episodes, both men struggle with the demons of their past. Ralph Macchio and William Zabka not only return to their original roles and form the center of the series, the two are also involved as executive producers. Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine) and "Harold and Kumar" writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are writing the screenplays, with the latter two also contributing their talents in the director's chair. The producers promise to stay true to the original film: "Cobra Kai will be a faithful sequel to the original film - full of wit, heart and exciting fight scenes." Youtube Red is a subscription-based streaming service. So it is no coincidence that Cobra Kai is to be shown there, the provider wants to expand its range of target groups in order to also reach viewers between 35 and 49 years of age, as stated by YouTube CEO Susanne Daniels.
