“Dark Rising” is a British indie production that sets the superhero scenario in the slums of East Africa and so far looks as if it could be the deeper, dirtier and more atmospheric Black Panther, just as a series. The concept trailer looks promising and hopefully the series will find a buyer. Well, Netflix, how about it?
From the politically charged slums of East Africa, to neglected communities across the world, Dark Rising tells the story of troubled youths discovering formidable and dangerous powers.
In our pilot, a wily and ambitious youth in Kenya explores his nascent abilities, trains his young sister and grasps for greater political ambitions. With a global scope and hyper-realistic tone, Dark Rising champions diversity in the superhero genre, pushing it into nuanced and more gritty territory. Edged closer to darkness than heroism, we watch as the show's protagonists rediscover and rebuild morality in a world where they could so easily rule supreme.
This concept pilot features under-represented African talent, local to Kibera slum in Nairobi - including debuts from Maxmillan Odhiambo and Ann Marie Chibole.
