In this documentary series, ORF III “zeit.geschichte” presenter and ORF international director Andreas Pfeifer explains the background to the major international conflicts of the 20th century, apart from the two world wars. No conflict is waged as relentlessly or lasts as long as the one in the Middle East. It is about a relatively small area of land that is referred to as the “holy land” by the three world religions. The reasons for the political and military upheaval go back a long time: Due to the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire after the First World War, the area was divided up by the victorious powers regardless of religious, cultural and tribal affiliation. During the Second World War, hundreds of thousands of Jews fled to Palestine to settle there out of fear of the Holocaust. The Arab population is pushed back and the first bloody clashes occur. As a result, the United Nations is proposing a two-state solution - with far-reaching consequences. Israel was founded in 1948 and a violent conflict broke out in the Middle East because the Arab states did not want to accept the newly founded Jewish state.
