The horror icon “The Mummy” has finally arrived in modern times. Because instead of going to the early twentieth century, as in the revival with Brendan Fraser, Universal Pictures prefers to let today's London tremble under the terrible plagues of a millennia-old horror figure in director Alex Kurtzman's reboot. We get a first taste of it in the following trailer. The poster motif makes it clear that the mummy was specifically taken to ancient Europe. There, Tom Cruise (War of the Worlds) and Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle) have to do everything they can to keep the vengeful mummy under control and prevent anything worse from happening. However, that won't be easy. According to Mummy author Jon Spaihts, the team invested a lot of time "making The Mummy something that really scares people."

Long before it hits theaters in summer 2017, Universal Pictures takes us behind the scenes with a so-called inside look, where it becomes clear how much effort went into staging the horror reboot. At this point we are looking in vain for pure studio space with a green or blue screen look. Many locations in the film were elaborately constructed in the studio or were created on location in Africa (Namibia) or London. Visually it doesn't look all that bad, but we'll have to wait and see whether it's actually any good.
