"The Green Inferno" is the name of the latest directorial work by horror and gore fanatic Eli Roth. In addition to his acting appearances as a bear Jew in "Inglourious Basterds" or an earthquake victim in "Aftershock", he is bringing his cannibal film "The Green Inferno" to the Midnight Madness at the Toronto International Film Festival. After the forest hut horror «Cabin Fever» and the tourist torment «Hostel» and «Hostel: Part II», Eli Roth returns to the screen after six years as a director. Once again he stages the fate of young Americans in unusual situations, albeit stereotypical for the horror genre. In "Green Inferno" inquisitive youngsters are drawn into the dark depths of the Amazon region. Actually, they wanted to research locals, but then they are captured by them. And it's not good to eat cherries with them, because the Americans don't like what the tribe likes to eat.
On Bloody Disgusting writes Mike Pereira, a big fan of Roth's work, that his craftsmanship has increased by leaps and bounds. “As extreme as the carnage gets, Roth maximizes the impact of his images at every turn. He knows when he can be graphically explicit, but also when not. (...) Eli Roth and the cannibal subgenre launch a long overdue and triumphant return." It is also once again Roth's most violent film. On hitfix praises the atmosphere of the film, which is created by the filming locations: "The film is lush, green and dimly lit and the real locations seem to be even more dangerous than the inhabitants." Roth would also move the story and individual scenes in directions that were not expected several times. Still, it would be perfect evening entertainment for Roth fans: "It's an apologetic horror film and definitely feels like an Eli Roth flick from start to finish."
A sequel called "Beyond The Green Inferno" has already been announced. However, Roth will let Aftershock director Nicolás López go first and only work as a producer himself. How Variety reports, Roth is co-writing the screenplay with Lopez and Guillermo Amoedo, as with The Green Inferno. In the spring of 2014, shooting will take place in Chile and Peru, where the original was made. Plot details for the sequel "Beyond the Green Inferno" are not yet known, but Lopez already has a clear idea of the atmosphere of his sequel: "The Green Inferno has a vast universe and we would be happy to explore it even further and deeper to penetrate into the jungle. Our plan with Beyond the Green Inferno is to create a sequel in the tradition of Aliens, where the creative team takes it one step further into the bigger, darker and more terrifying unknown."
