Fasting has not been as relevant as it is today since the Middle Ages. Around half a million Austrians fast regularly. Our diet is always based on new beliefs, and now another trend has reached mainstream society: not eating at all. At least on a daily basis. Fasting as the body's self-healing and dosed hunger as an anti-aging concept - will this also be part of medicine in the future? Health, natural beauty, vitality and a good figure - who wouldn't want that? It is now undisputed that the key to health and well-being also lies in nutrition and healthy, efficient digestion. A wide variety of nutritional concepts from "Stone Age" to holistic are flanked by countless diet variants. And almost a lifestyle must: Fasting.
The opinions of the experts are just as diverse as the possible fasting cures, a whole fasting industry from hotels to the media and book market has already developed. Characterized by keywords such as purification, detoxification and deacidification, fasting is intended to regenerate the intestines from the ground up and show us the way to a natural and conscious way of life. The scientific focus is also on the two medical terms “autophagy” and “spermidine”. Autophagy is the controlled self-destruction of cell components, broadly a repair process in the body, and gained worldwide fame in 2016 when Japanese researcher Yoshinori Ohsumi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his research into the autophagy mechanism.
But scientists in Austria have also been tracking this phenomenon for some time. Another possible fountain of youth was discovered at the University of Graz in 2009: Spermidine, contained in the highest concentration in male semen, i.e. in semen, allows cells and organisms to live longer. It is also contained in wheat germ. Since then, there has also been a real research boom around this substance worldwide, because, among other things, it is said to be able to keep hunger in check when fasting.
A wide field with many questions: Does fasting mean starvation? Which metabolic processes are set in motion? What is the difference between fasting and a diet? - Is fasting good for weight loss? -Is a healthy diet to be considered equal? Can fasting actually help delay the aging process? How is this possible? Does fasting help prevent chronic diseases? Does fasting have a positive effect on our mood? Can Fasting Help Prevent Chronic Disease? Is it actually possible to activate one's self-healing powers through fasting – and even to destroy cancer cells? Mag. pharm.
