From the perspective of the AfD leaders, May 8, 1945 was not a day of liberation, but rather a defeat. The fact that her party colleague Tino Chrupalla took part in a reception given by the “former occupying power” Russia on this occasion is purely symbolic for her. She would never “celebrate the defeat of her own country” – especially not with the “former occupiers”. This is strong talk and shows once again that historical revisionism is omnipresent in the AfD. But unlike, for example, Gauland's “bird shit speech,” this time there was no storm of indignation among politicians and the media. Apparently it is socially acceptable again to interpret the defeat of the German Reich in the Second World War as “our” defeat – at least when it comes to the war in the East. It is not Weidel's not particularly surprising identification with the Third Reich, but rather the lack of criticism of it that is a warning sign of the state of the political discourse.
