When in 2006, more precisely on May 25th in Madrid, 300 geeks proclaimed "Geek Pride Day" and honored this day with a human Pac-Man on the Internet, nobody could have guessed that in 2007 the day would receive even more attention and This degenerated from official institutions and events in several Spanish cities and a "nerd blood donation campaign" until "Geek Pride Day" spilled over the big pond in 2008 and was held in America for the first time, until Canada followed in 2009...
But what is Geek Pride Day actually about? Quite simply, every person has the right to be a nerd or a geek and is celebrated in honor of the premiere of the first Star Wars film in 1977 on May 25th. Here is the manifesto, in which the basic rights and responsibilities of geeks were written:
Right:
- The right to be even geekier.
- The right not to leave the house.
- The right not to have a partner and to be a virgin.
- The right not to like football or any other sport.
- The right to team up with other nerds.
- The right to have few (or no) friends.
- The right to have as many geek friends as you want.
- The right not to be “in-style”.
- The right to be overweight and nearsighted.
- The right to show off one's geekiness.
- The right to take over the world.
Responsibilities:
- Be a geek no matter what.
- Try to be more nerdy than anyone else.
- If something geeky is being discussed, you have to express your opinion.
- Keep all the geeky stuff you have.
- Do what you can to show off your geeky stuff like it's a "museum of geekyness."
- Don't just be a geek in general. Specialize in something.
- Attend every nerdy movie at the premiere and buy every geeky book before everyone else.
- Stand in line for every premiere. If you can wear a costume, or at least a movie-related t-shirt, so much the better.
- Don't waste time doing something that isn't geekdom.
- Make friends with anyone who has any physical resemblance to comic or science fiction characters.
- Try to take over the world!
