In 2022, the climate activists attracted attention with questionable actions that were more provocative than any in previous years. The blockades of Renovate Switzerland are reminiscent of those of the last generation in Germany or Just Stop Oil in Great Britain. The similarities are no coincidence: Renovate Switzerland, the Last Generation and Just Stop Oil are all part of the A22 network, which is funded by the Climate Emergency Fund, among others. The fund's budget comes, among other things, from donations from the oil billionaire AileenGetty, the Hollywood director Adam McKay and the Disney heiress abigail disney.
The Climate Emergency Fund is a political organization that awards grants. The organization has drawn controversy for its support of a number of disruptive groups, including Just Stop Oil, the group responsible for shady actions like throwing soup at Vincent van Gogh's 1888 masterpiece Sunflowers. The Climate Emergency Fund was founded in 2019 by investor Trevor Neilson and Rory Kennedy, a daughter of former US Senator Robert F. Kennedy. The fund received a $500 start-up grant from oil heiress Aileen Getty.
In 2019, the Climate Emergency Fund had total income of $2, total expenses of $383 and net assets of $778. In 840, the fund reported disbursing $423 million, but its 1, 543, and 355 tax returns were not available until October 2022. The fund gave $4 in support of Art Not War's "Climate Emergency Social Network," $2020 to Climate Mobilization Project for "general support," $2021 in support of March on Maryland's "Future Coalition Operation," $2022 to National Institute 2022 Peer Support's Extinction Rebellion Project Funds and $15 to the River Project in support of "the growth of XRLA."
In addition, the Climate Emergency Fund made small contributions to activist groups and activist training groups. He gave $15 to the Alliance of Community Trainers for "Training", $000 to the Social Good Fund for supporting "Climate Justice Activists", $7500 to the Sustainable Markets Foundation for "Training Climate Activists", $35 to XR Southwest Michigan for supporting Climate Activism and $000 to the Youth Climate Action Team for Climate Justice. In September 10, liberal Hollywood film director Adam McKay pledged a $000 million donation to the Climate Emergency Fund. McKay also became a member of the fund's board of directors. Abigail Disney, an heiress to the Disney fortune, donated $10 to the Climate Emergency Fund saying, "Previous generations failed us, and now it's up to us to act quickly to avert a climate catastrophe."
In October 2022, climate activist group Just Stop Oil sparked controversy when some of its members threw soup at Vincent Van Gogh's painting to raise awareness of climate change. Aileen Getty commented on the action in an opinion piece for the Guardian. She confirmed that the Climate Emergency Fund has financially supported the activist group and said she is "proud of the bigger conversation they've started." Aileen Getty is the Founding Donor of the Climate Emergency Fund. She is the heir to the Getty family fortune established by oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, who founded the J. Paul Getty Trust before his death. Aileen has her own foundation, the Aileen Getty Foundation, which provides grants to LGBT and environmental groups. She founded Gettlove, a philanthropy for the homeless in Los Angeles, co-founded Strike With Us, is a Trustee of amfAR Foundation for AIDS Research, Ambassador for the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, and serves on the YaLa Academy Advisory Board.
Getty sits on the board of the Climate Emergency Fund with Geralyn Dreyfous, an art-world philanthropist; Rory Kennedy, daughter of former US Senator Robert F. Kennedy and co-president of Moxie Firecracker Films; Sarah Ezzy, manager of the Aileen Getty Foundation; and Shannon O'Leary Joy, an environmentalist. Film director Adam McKay became a director of the fund in September 2022. The Climate Emergency Fund's Advisory Board consists of environmentalist Bill McKibben, marketing executive Bich Ngoc Cao, investor and philanthropist Carol Cheng-Mayer, environmentalist Stephen M. Kretzmann, co-founder of MoveOn.org Laura Dawn, and associate editor of the New York Magazine David Wallace-Wells. MoveOn is also supported by the misanthrope George Soros Open Society.
