Yesterday, Thursday, cable broadcaster TNT announced in a press conference that the rights to the cult show had been secured and the new "Tales From The Crypt" would go on the air in the fall. Executive Producer Manoj Night Shyamalan is overseeing a two-hour horror slot, the core of which will be the new series in the classic half-hour format, explicitly based on the old comics.
It was publisher William M. Gaines, the father of the American "MAD Magazine", who fascinated young people with his comic series "Tales From The Crypt" from 1950 to 1955 and brought parents, teachers and overzealous moralizers to the barricades. In 1989, the creepy stories made it into the HBO program, where, thanks to its encryption, the protection of minors could be outsmarted and good ratings were achieved for seven seasons with sex and violence in bizarre stories. The original series was practically unwatchable in this country and mutilated by youth guard censors, but thanks to Gore in «The Walking Dead» the topic should be off the table these days, not to mention the alternative distribution channels...
The producer of the new scary stories will be Oscar-nominated Manoj Night Shyamalan, who grew up with the HBO series at the time and can't wait to push the limits of television with this popular brand. Shyamalan will also direct at least the first episode and, together with his production company Binding Edge Pictures, be responsible for about four other series projects that are currently being planned.
I don't quite know what to think of it. Shyamalan is theatrical talent, as long as he can leave out the pretentious frills, because the horror genre brings hidden messages and subversive elements all by itself. Practically all of his films suffer from running times that are too long, this is most evident in «The Happening». Absolutely fantastic trailer, great opening and halfway through the film dies in meaningful nonsense. The problem is more likely to arise with a fun horror format like Tales from the Crypt.
But the first bad news about the reboot, the Crypt Keeper, which was originally voiced by John Kassir, is not included because HBO owns the rights to it. TNT President Kevin Reilly has an idea for a new "Cryptkeeper". The character in the form of a living skeleton was already born in the comics and introduces the stories as a narrator. She was also used as a creepy doll on HBO and is the mascot of the series. Reilly did not want to reveal any further details.
Anyway, the following is an original playlist of the 1st season for you. Have fun!
