The dead body of a whale floats near Rottnest Island and is gutted by about a dozen sharks. At the sight, the Australian Harrison Williams (26) has an idea. "I was on the water with my buddies," says Williams to "Perth Now". "One of them said it would be fun to surf the whale. So I did it." The local jumps into the water and mounts the animal. Williams says he's already seen the sharks. 'But they were so busy biting the whale. So it didn't seem that dangerous."
The Australian whale expert Will Jones describes the action as "a very, very stupid idea". The sharks would have been after the whale, but Williams could have been attacked by accident. The whale surfer seems to have changed his mind about his liner as well. Williams says it wasn't until he was standing on the whale's back that he realized how dangerous and stupid his action was. "I wouldn't do it again," he told TV channel Seven News. "It was a stupid idea. I didn't mean to offend anyone. My mum thinks I'm a jerk now and my dad isn't too proud either."
