The «Recycled Orchestra», made up of children living in the municipality of Cateura, located at the top of the largest garbage dump in the Paraguayan capital of Asunción. Cateura is in a place where parents cannot afford instruments for their children. A place where people live in, with and from waste. The ecologist and music teacher Favio Chavez opened a music school there. And so that the children can live out their creativity and receive hope for a better life, he has teamed up with Nicolás Gómez - nicknamed "Cola". This builds instruments from waste such as oil drums, spoons and water pipes. Everything is used and the youngsters play the waste instruments in Chavez's orchestra.
In 2010, a film crew met the children and young people of the orchestra for the first time and then filmed them in several stages. Next year the movie «Landfill Harmonic" be completed. The film accompanies individual children, the initiator of the music school Favio Chavez and the instrument maker "Cola". It is intended to draw people's attention to the issue of poverty and sensitize them to environmental pollution caused by waste. And it should show how much hope can arise when the focus is creatively on solving the problems and how waste and recycling materials can be transformed into beautiful sounding musical instruments.
