Zdeněk Miler is died on November 30th at the age of 90. You know Miler, he invented the little mole. From 1957 Miler drew the films with the little mole, which made him internationally known. The cartoon character loved by children around the world was inspired by the Czech when he stumbled over a molehill in a wooded area west of Prague. "So I said to myself, 'This is it. The mole.'» Miler said on Czech radio in 2006. Miler had been looking for a new character for a film in the 50s that no one else would use. "Walt Disney used almost all of the animals in his cartoons except one," Miler said. "That was chosen by me." From his earnings he afforded himself a small house in a residential area of Prague. After he had to stop drawing in 2002, he spent the last few years as a very old man in a retirement home in Nová Ves pod Pleší.

How much Zdeněk Miler identified with the mole can be seen in a quote: "It took me a long time to understand it, but when I draw Krtek, I draw myself." Right from the start, the Mole was a huge success in Czechoslovakia and today the Mole can be seen in over 80 countries. Since 1972, regular episodes of the Mole have appeared in the German show mit der Maus.
For me, Zdeněk Miler was actually one of the greats. His films and characters - really cornerstones of my childhood! Didn't someone even say that you haven't died as long as there is still someone in the world who remembers you? Good night, Mr. Miler.
