Taiwan's BaoXing Municipality in New Taipei City has taken a new approach to solving the garbage problem by enlisting the help of AI and God. The city is plagued by garbage littering. The reason for this is a unique garbage system in which residents have to wait for the garbage truck to arrive with their garbage. The system means you have to bring your rubbish home if you're late and miss the truck - or throw it out when no one is looking, which has led to a rise in littering.
To tackle the problem, the BaoXing city government has introduced a unique solution: an AI-powered device that detects dump trucks and projects a holographic image to deter them. In this case, the behavior detection detector uses the image of Tudigong, the god of the country in Taoism, who is respected like a family elder in Taiwan. The aim of the technical solution is for litter litterers to see the holographic image and be reminded not to dispose of their litter illegally. The GOD-IS-WATCHING Behavior Recognition Detector was developed by Leo Burnett Taiwan and Digitas Taiwan.
Within three months of the system's launch, illegal garbage has dropped by 73%, and local authorities are investigating deploying the technology in other areas of New Taipei City. Kevin Yang, CEO and CCO at Leo Burnett Taiwan, says, "Most people don't throw their trash with bad intentions, so creating a little holographic god was the dumbest way we could think of to show the BaoXing City Council how creativity and technology can improve our neighborhoods."
