The UK government reports the latest excess mortality data showing a continuing worrying rise in mortality. Focusing on England and Wales, provisional counts of recorded deaths by age, sex and region are published in the latest weeks for which data is available. This dataset contains the most recent available figures on coronavirus (COVID-19)-related deaths.
The latest data compares 2019, the year before the COVID-19 pandemic, and 2023, which represents the transition out of the global health emergency.

The number of deaths observed in a given period that exceeds the number expected based on historical data is a metric often used to better understand the impact of events such as pandemics, natural disasters, or other crises that affect mortality rates understand.
How is excess mortality calculated?
Excess mortality is calculated by comparing the actual number of deaths in a given period with the expected number of deaths based on past trends. The expected number of deaths is usually determined using data from previous years, taking into account factors such as population growth and age distribution.
Helps provide a more comprehensive understanding of the extent of the impact
For an event such as COVID-19, excess mortality may be a more comprehensive measure of overall impact than reported deaths directly related to the specific cause (e.g., COVID-19 deaths). This is because some deaths related to the event may not be directly attributable to the cause and there may be other indirect effects, such as: B. How does a crisis really affect mortality?
