Classic Murder Mystery and Whodunit stories in the style of the great Agatha Christie classics are booming again, and what works in mainstream cinema should really be able to be translated into genre cinema, where murder and manslaughter (and that's still the friendliest, most harmless variant) are part of day-to-day business and good manners. Now Josh Ruben delivers the proof and with «Werwolves Within» his very personal Murder Mystery variant, which has all the typical elements of a standard whodunit story, but is completely different because it turned out to be a lot hairier and, above all, more biting!
In his story, it seems that it is not a human, but an indescribable beast behind the murders and disfigured victims that have recently piled up in a sleepy Canadian backwater (not dissimilar to the filmmaker's hometown, according to the filmmaker). However, anyone who senses a quickly cobbled together copy in the wake of "Knives Out" in order to benefit from the current Murder Mystery boom, as the infamous The Asylum productions (current example: Ape vs. Monster) like to do, is lying right next to it. "Werewolves Within" may be structured similarly to Rian Johnson's star-picked hit, of which Netflix recently ordered two sequels (for an incredible 450 million dollars!) and basically makes no secret of its obvious role models, above all the novels and film adaptations Agatha Christies, but goes back to the VR video game of the same name from Ubisoft, for which a film adaptation was announced in 2018 - long before "Knives Out".
Both films were shot almost at the same time. Even if the gigantic success of Johnson's film may well have contributed to giving "Werwolves Within" the necessary final push, any parallels that may have arisen were more of a coincidence. And as the trailer impressively underlines, the supposed copy does not need to hide from the most well-known representatives of the field. The background story of "Werwolves Within" is told quickly and should be kept as short as possible for spoiler reasons: Essentially, it's about a city that is snowed in by a blizzard. No one comes in or out of here. This makes the mysterious series of murders that is just beginning at this moment all the more puzzling. A hunter (Sam Richardson) and a postwoman (Milana Vayntrub) try to get to the bottom of the mystery. The culprit? It could be anyone! The list of suspects is correspondingly long, made up of comedy talents and prominent guest stars in equal measure, including Sam Richardson (Veep), Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us), George Basil, Sarah Burns (Barry), Catherine Curtin (Orange Is The New Black), Harvey Guillén (What We Do In The Shadows), Rebecca Henderson (Russian Doll) and Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story). From June 25th, American moviegoers will be the first to join the puzzle. When and if "Werewolves Within" will also haunt us remains open for the time being.
