ELENA - sounds charming, but it's not. ELENA will be a gigantic data collection, the largest ever created in Germany. Since 01.01. This year, sensitive data of over 40 million employees will be saved - including monthly salaries, absenteeism, dismissals and warnings. The employer has to forward all of this to the state every month, which stores the data for at least two years and collects it in the event that an employee applies for state benefits. Most of the data collected is never used. Data protectionists are warning of a new dimension in government data retention that is an invitation to abuse.
