Lately you've been hearing more old school thrash metal again and so «Mortal Peril» are also representatives of this genre. With «Walking On Hellish Trails», the Cologne band released their debut album last month. "Mortal Peril" was founded in 2010 by drummer Jonas Linnartz and bassist/singer Jan Radermacher in the industrial town of Wesseling and first drew attention to themselves in 2012 with their EP "Of Black Days And Cruel Alliances". With their debut album "Walking On Hellish Trails", Mortal Peril unleash their first long player on the thrashing part of humanity, well seasoned with raw, punk energy and classic NWOBHM melodies.
As mentioned, «Mortal Peril» was founded in 2010 by Jonas and Jan and after the arrival of guitarist Tasso, the first gigs were played in clubs and at house parties. In 2011 Lucas was added as second guitarist and in mid-2012 the first EP "Of Black Days and Cruel Alliances" followed, which was not only liked in Germany, but also received positive reviews from Italy, France and South America. In 2013 Tasso left the band to explore other musical directions, shortly after which Lucas left the band for professional reasons. After a few months of searching, the thrashers completed themselves again at the beginning of 2014 with Bjornsson Greene and Fabian Gerhardt on the six-strings and continued to work the stages in North Rhine-Westphalia. The first album «Walking on Hellisch Trails» was also self-recorded with this line-up. Unfortunately Fabian had to drop out at the end of 2014 due to his studies and so the place was free for guitarist Pete Rode. Complete once again and with their album behind them, Mortal Peril look forward to ripping off some heavy gigs.
In terms of sound, Mortal Peril celebrate Thrash, well seasoned with punk energy and classic NWOBHM melodies. Despite all the 80s nostalgia, the four guys put their own stamp on their songs. The quartet focuses on fast, punky and powerful Thrash Metal, which has been enriched with a good portion of NWOBHM. Mortal Peril don't reinvent the wheel either, but are absolutely authentic and hit it live like a well-lubricated suppository. "Clear in the head or drunken as shit" - after these lines from the opener it is clear what the motto of the studio work was. The varied subject matter of the songs shows that songwriter and frontman Jan Radermacher lets himself go completely creatively and the band doesn't want to position itself in a stylistic corner. Socially critical themes in tracks like "Death to all the Tyrants" and "Devil Seed" are replaced by humorous lyrics like in "Señor Wampo" or "Eyekiller", which is ultimately rounded off by the tribute song "Inglorious Basterds" to the film that gives it its name .
Radermacher draws his inspiration for the songs from events he has experienced. For example, the song "Eyekiller" is a homage to the fact that drummer Jonas hit his eye with his drumstick the first time he played this piece and his contact lens shattered in his eye. Thus he provided the perfect template for one of the best songs on the album. The guys convince with their sound across the board. The compositions of hard drumbeats, rhythmic basslines and two-part guitar riffs result in the band's unmistakable sound. The whole thing is crowned by the melodic guitar solos of the two ax swingers. The production is successful and lyrically the usual clichés are used, although in the song "Hail Satan" with "Rape Maria, Kill Jesus" etc. the bird is shot down a bit and the chorus of "The Ones Left Behind" is a bit too comes across as infantile.
"Walking on hellish trails" is a varied album that shows that "Mortal Peril" revives the thrash metal sound of the 80s and makes you want more. This album is the best example that even a self-produced album doesn't have to hide from other records. What the four guys have beaten up here just won't let you sit still on your neck. Outstanding are the very cool "My Inner Condition", "Eyekiller" and the rapid opener "2 Step Crew". The band's style is not limited to pure Thrash Metal, influences from Punk, Hardcore and NWOBHM can sometimes be heard more, sometimes less. The band puts their own stamp on their songs and somehow I have the feeling that «Mortal Peril» will be heard a lot more in the future. In this sense: «Clear in the head or drunken as shit, Mortal peril sneaker crew is wasting the pit!»
