Toho has released a trailer for the highly anticipated kaiju film “Godzilla Minus One” from writer and director Takashi Yamazaki. The new trailer shows the King of Monsters wreaking havoc on buildings, trains, battleships and more after rising from the sea. The trailer coincides with the film's nationwide theatrical release in Japan. Godzilla Minus One celebrates the 69th anniversary of Toho's original Godzilla film (also known as Gojira), which was released on this day in 1954.
Godzilla Minus One is the fifth film of the Reiwa era of the franchise (as well as the 33rd Godzilla film from Toho and the 37th Godzilla film overall). The film takes place in Japan in the years 1945-1947. “After the war, Japan is reduced to nothing,” says the official synopsis. «Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state. How – and with whom – will Japan defend itself against the most desperate situation in the country's history?"
Yamazaki not only wrote and directed the screenplay, but also developed the visual effects of “Godzilla Minus One” together with Kiyoko Shibuya. The Kaiju film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Kuranosuke Sasaki.
Of course, “Godzilla Minus One” is far from the end of Godzilla’s big birthday party. The Godzilla spin-off series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” – set in Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures’ MonsterVerse – is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, November 17th. After that, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” – the next film from the MonsterVerse – will be released in cinemas worldwide on April 12, 2024.
“Godzilla Minus One” is now showing in Japan. The film will be released in cinemas in the USA on November 29th.
