The film seems to have a tragic relevance because Sylvester Stallone experienced the violent conflicts in Burma first hand. The actor spent six months in the border area between Thailand and Burma for filming. At the Salween River, he witnessed horrific images, as he reported in an interview with the newspaper “USA Today”. He literally said:
«There was shooting over our heads. I have seen survivors with open legs and many injuries that come from landmines, wounds full of maggots or cut ears. This is even worse than your worst dreams.«
It was common knowledge that things had been going on like this for a long time in Burma, but the monks' uprising finally made the world aware of this untenable situation.
