What does Hollywood actor Johnny Depp have to do with «The Walking Dead»? TWD co-producer Greg Nicotero revealed this and some other exciting and funny details about episode 12 in an interview.
While we and especially the series characters had little to laugh about in the first seasons of the initially rather gloomy apocalypse series, since the current sixth season at the latest there is more and more time for humorous moments. Starting with Daryl's mostly cynical comments, to Eugene's absolutely awkward behavior towards women, to scenes where you would least expect humor, such as in the last episode where one of the security guards put his hand in Gregory's "head". stuck and acted like a puppeteer. Co-producer and makeup artist Greg Nicotero told in an interview with Entertainment Weekly more about the shooting of episode 12 and revealed some exciting details about that "head".
When asked what he could tell us about the production of those three Gregory Walker heads from episode 12, Greg Nicotero replied:
It's kind of hilarious because a lot of people ask me how many guest appearances I've had as Walker on the show. Well, Gregory's head is actually a cast of my own head! When Xander Berkeley was cast to play Gregory, we didn't have time to bring him over to Los Angeles to cast his head & make a dummy out of it. So I sent photos of him and said, 'Here's a picture of the actor. Let's see what we can come up with that looks as similar as possible to Xander.' And it ended up being a cast of my own head. So that head that he [Rick] picks up at the end is my own fake head!
Would you have recognized him? Whereby the resemblance to Xander Berkeley's Gregory just because of the tousled walker hair is really striking! Only the nose didn't quite fit - but luckily Rick had a solution ... What Greg Nicotero then revealed about the other two heads lying on the floor in front of Rick made us smile:
One of the other two heads - I don't know if I'll get in any more trouble if I say that - was Johnny Depp's. I think we once made a slightly emaciated version of a dummy for some reason and used Johnny Depp's head as a template for the clay. Unfortunately I can't remember who the third one was, but I can say I'm in good company!
Who would have thought that Johnny Depp would one day have a cameo appearance on «The Walking Dead», albeit a rather involuntary one. The scene when the second guard of the Saviors finally puts his hand in Gregory's supposed head and apes him is just funny and not only we viewers find that. "I laughed so hard when we were filming that scene," Greg Nicotero admitted to EW, describing it as "one of the funniest moments of the season." Well then, let's hope that with the gloomy prospects, the funny moments won't be neglected...
