The creators of the reboot are of course aware that the remake of the medieval ballad of Robin Hood has to fight against some of its predecessors. As director Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders – Gangs of Birmingham) has explained in interviews, he was even skeptical when presented with the idea. He ultimately chose the film because the story of an outlaw fighting for social justice is more relevant now than ever. His "Robin Hood" is supposed to be a modern and dark interpretation of the medieval material, which alludes to current problems such as the gaping gap between rich and poor. Despite the socially critical approach, the action will of course not be neglected. A guarantee for this is certainly the main actor Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service). The leading supporting roles are played by stars such as Jamie Foxx (Baby Driver) and "Fifty Shades of Gray" actor Jamie Dorman, while the female lead of Maid Marian is played by U2 frontman Bono's daughter Eve Hewson (Bridge of Spies). When "Robin Hood" starts in our cinemas on January 10, 2019, fans of "Game of Thrones" can look forward to seeing old locations again.
The young nobleman Robin of Loxley (Taron Egerton) is drafted against his will to fight in the Crusades. Four years later, he returns home bitter and traumatized. But in the meantime, England has changed: Robin's lands have been ransacked, the love of his life Marian (Eve Hewson) is in someone else's arms. Most of the population is exploited and enslaved by a few rich lords. Robin decides to team up with a former war enemy: John (Jamie Foxx) teaches him how to become a faster archer, steal from the rich and give to the poor. Driven by revenge, Robin Hood is born. Meanwhile, the wealthy elite, led by the Sheriff of Nottingham (Ben Mendelsohn), plot more evil against the people and the Crown. As the voice of reason, Will Scarlett (Jamie Dornan) gathers the citizens around him. But against the mighty of the land, the people need a hero with clear vision and battle experience. As «The Hood», Robin, with the help of John and brother Tuck (Tim Minchin), soon manages to declare war on the tyranny of the authorities.
