"The Grudge" received an R rating, which is rather untypical for a ghost horror, due to "disturbing violence and bloody images, terror and the language". This makes the title the first Grudge feature film with this rating. For producer Sam Raimi, however, this was no reason to send director Nicolas Pesce back to the editing studio to have him defuse the horror thriller. Instead, the release is now being celebrated with a Red Band trailer that shows us clearly (and quite gory at that) why the MPAA (the American equivalent of the FSK) came to this decision.
Of course, Raimi and Co. will only show the rest from January 9, 2020, when “The Grudge” starts regularly in our cinemas. However, box office experts doubt that the reboot will be able to build on the success of the 2004 film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy). At the moment, the assumption is that the result will be similar to that of "Rings", which opened in 2017 with 13 million and thus fell well short of expectations. Is it time for a new curse? The film stars Andrea Riseborough (Mandy) as a police officer investigating unexplained cases, all of which appear to be connected to a mysterious house. Director Nicolas Pesce (The Eyes of My Mother) explains: "We follow her and two other storylines, all related to a haunted house in suburban America, but told with a time delay." Pesce goes into more detail: “Our film is structured like seven. Andrea [Riseborough] plays a detective who stumbles upon this mysterious new case. She is unbelievable. That kind of cop drama drives the whole movie." The Grudge cast is led by Andrea Riseborough, Demian Bichir (The Nun), John Cho (Searching), William Sadler (The Mist) and Jacki Weaver.
