«The New Mutants» was traded as the «first horror film in the X-Men universe» and has already been written off due to multiple postponements, but Walt Disney still wants to bring Josh Boone's creepy mutant thriller to the cinemas as planned. The proof is provided by the eagerly awaited trailer including the new start date on April 16, 2020. Here we get to know the inmates of an alleged mental institution. But they are not as normal as they seem at first glance.
Those incarcerated here have to contend with problems that are far beyond our imagination. In the trailer, Magik, played by Anya Taylor-Joy (Split, The Witch), brags about the murders she's already committed. That explains the high security fences that are set up around the building. But they are really locked up for their own protection, as the doctor in charge, Dr. Cecilia Reyes, played by Alice Braga from "I Am Legend" or "Predators", claims, or is there something completely different behind it? Because the 'therapy' doesn't always go smoothly. Each of the young mutants has to fight its own demons, is plagued by dark visions and apparitions. This turns the facility into a powder keg about to explode!
The young mutants can survive, including Maisie Williams (HBO's Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Morgan Project, The Witch, Glass, Split) as Magik, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things, Marrowbone) as Cannonball and Blu Hunt as Mirage, only if they combine their newfound powers and fight together against evil. The film version used is the one with which «The New Mutants» should have started in cinemas from the beginning, before the horror thriller was postponed several times and prepared for extensive reshoots, which ultimately never took place. What is certain is that a highly explosive and spooky adventure awaits us when «The New Mutants» arrives in our cinemas in April, two years late.
